Key Requirements
Microchip + Vaccinations
ISO-standard microchip must be implanted before the first rabies vaccination (both can be done the same day). A minimum of two rabies vaccinations are required — the second at least 30 days after the first. Only inactivated or recombinant vaccines meeting OIE standards are accepted; live virus vaccines are not.
Rabies Antibody Test (RNATT)
Mandatory, performed at a government-designated laboratory after the second vaccination. The result must show a titer of at least 0.5 IU/ml and is valid for 2 years. After a passing result, a 180-day waiting period applies before arrival — this cannot be shortened. Confirm the current list of designated laboratories with a certified agent, as it can change.
Parasite Treatment
Treatment for external parasites (fleas, ticks) and internal parasites (nematodes, cestodes) required before arrival.
Advance Notification
Must be submitted to the Japanese government quarantine authority (MAFF) at least 40 days before arrival. Without this, entry is not permitted. Verify the exact requirements for your species (dogs and cats may differ) with a certified agent before travel.
Clinical Inspection
Must be performed by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days before boarding.
